Tragic Pennsylvania Shooting Leaves Nine Dead, Including Two Children

A devastating shooting in Erie, Pennsylvania, resulted in nine deaths on Friday, including two children and the suspected gunman, according to Governor Josh Shapiro and local authorities.

Erie police responded to emergency calls reporting shots fired at approximately 5:00 pm local time (21:00 GMT) and initially discovered two women dead in the street, as reported by Erie News Now. The armed suspect then barricaded himself inside a nearby residence as officers surrounded the property.

During the standoff, additional gunshots were heard. Upon entering the home, law enforcement officers found multiple additional victims, including two children. According to police, the suspected attacker died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Responding officers were offered counseling following the horrific event. Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah expressed deep shock, stating it was the worst loss of life and devastation the city had ever witnessed in his extensive career.

Governor Josh Shapiro confirmed that he offered his administration's full support to Erie Mayor Daria Devlin in the wake of the tragedy, which highlights the ongoing issue of frequent mass shootings across the United States.
