Pope Leo XIV has announced plans to undergo surgery to remove a localized lung nodule after routine check-ups revealed the mass. Speaking to the crowds gathered in St Peter’s Square for the Angelus prayer on Sunday, the 71-year-old pontiff shared details regarding the upcoming procedure.

“During some check-ups, doctors discovered a localized nodule on my lung,” Pope Leo stated. “It was detected at a very early stage and is well-defined. The doctors deem it advisable to intervene, so, following their advice, I have decided to undergo surgery to remove it.”

A Vatican spokesman clarified that the operation is scheduled for early next week, requiring approximately a week-long hospital stay for recovery. While most lung nodules are non-cancerous, the medical intervention has been planned for the coming days.

Generally considered to be in good health and known for playing tennis, Pope Leo maintains an active lifestyle. His upcoming medical procedure precedes a planned major visit to Latin America from November 6-17, where he is scheduled to travel to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru.
