At least 33 people lost their lives on Thursday when a Russian strike ignited two public buses in eastern Ukraine, local authorities confirmed, marking the single deadliest attack of the year. The strike in Kramatorsk, located in the Donetsk region, also left 18 people injured, prompting officials to suspend the public transport network and urge residents to relocate to safer areas of the country.

“The Russians are deliberately targeting civilians,” stated Vadym Filashkin, head of the Donetsk regional military administration. “For them, a bus full of passengers is an attractive target precisely because a single strike can kill as many people as possible.”

The State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SES) reported that the Russian assault triggered fires on two buses and the surrounding vicinity. Donetsk police noted that Russian drones also targeted officers who were actively assisting victims at the scene. Authorities are working to identify the casualties, with some remains requiring reconstruction from fragments, according to a police statement.

Footage released from the rescue operation depicted bodies along the road as drones hovered nearby and emergency responders loaded the injured into ambulances. Vadym Filashkin subsequently ordered the suspension of public transit in Kramatorsk and Sloviansk, reiterating his plea for civilians to evacuate the region.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian negotiators are scheduled to travel to the US for meetings on Friday and Saturday. Sources indicated that US envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, son-in-law of President Donald Trump, will meet with Ukraine’s intelligence chief Rustem Umerov and Kyrylo Budanov, head of the Office of Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky. President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the two-day talks will focus heavily on bolstering Ukraine’s air defenses.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio remarked during a visit to Portugal that the conflict remains in a dangerous stalemate, emphasizing Washington’s commitment to a permanent and fair negotiated resolution. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov acknowledged the assessment, noting that diplomats bear the responsibility for finding a peaceful path forward.
