UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham participated in a business forum at the Chancellery in Berlin on October 8, 2026. During an interview with The Rest Is Politics podcast released on Sunday, Burnham stated that it is "clear" Russia interfered in the country’s 2016 Brexit vote, while also cautioning French and German voters about identical threats.

"I asked the question coming to Downing Street: Was there interference in the 2016 referendum from Russia? And I’ve had the clear answer that yes, there was," Burnham remarked. This statement represents the first occasion a UK prime minister has openly acknowledged Russian meddling in the UK’s decision to exit the European Union, though Burnham omitted any supporting evidence or specifics.

Burnham emphasized that placing these facts on the record is crucial to helping voters in Germany and France recognize that certain political movements are fueled by adversaries like Russia. He further mentioned discussing potential connections between Russia and the far-right Alternative for Germany party with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz during their meeting in Berlin last week. Previously, at the United Nations General Assembly in September, Burnham also denounced Russian attempts to meddle in the UK’s 2019 general election.

A 2020 report from Parliament’s Intelligence and Security Committee previously indicated that the UK government neglected to request a thorough evaluation of Russian interference during the 2016 referendum, although the report verified Russian meddling in the 2014 Scottish independence referendum. Meanwhile, Russia has consistently rejected accusations of meddling in Western democracies or foreign elections, labeling the UK as affected by "anti-Russian hysteria".

Last month, Burnham suggested that the UK ought to explore possibilities for a renewed relationship with the EU, which includes potentially rejoining the bloc and reigniting discussions over a decade after the original vote. He asserted that leaving the EU failed to deliver on the promises made by Brexit supporters to "take back control," leaving the UK weaker economically and regarding immigration.
