In a stunning upset at the Shanghai Masters, unseeded Belgian Zizou Bergs defeated seven-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz in the round of 32. The 7-5, 7-6(4) victory for Bergs not only marks the biggest win of his career but also confirms Alexander Zverev's position as the ATP's year-end world number one.

Alcaraz, who recently defended his Japan Open title and was building momentum after a wrist injury layoff, struggled to find his rhythm during the tightly contested two-hour, two-minute match. The second-seeded Spaniard, who returned to action at the US Open in late August after nearly five months sidelined, joined other high-profile casualties at the ATP Masters 1000 event, including Novak Djokovic and Ben Shelton.

Bergs delivered a composed, all-court performance, adapting well to the quick conditions. The 27-year-old managed to break Alcaraz's serve three times to secure the monumental victory. Despite having lost their only previous encounter at last year's Japan Open, Bergs showed no signs of intimidation, outplaying the 23-year-old Alcaraz in crucial moments.

"This is something that has been very tough for me," Bergs commented on his win against a top ATP Tour player. "I often have too much respect for these guys, which is part of my culture and I’m proud of that. But it gets a little bit in the way when you have to play them… The more experience you have practising against them and playing matches, the more it becomes the new standard a little bit. To have this moment, for me it is a little bit of a relief. I feel like now I really can win against these guys."

The upset also had significant implications for Alexander Zverev, securing the 29-year-old French Open and US Open champion the ATP's year-end world number one ranking. This achievement makes Zverev the first German and the oldest first-time player to reach this milestone.

Zverev's path to the top ranking was aided by Jannik Sinner's absence from play since July 12 due to a knee injury. Sinner, who beat Zverev in the Wimbledon final, missed the North American hard-court tournaments, including the US Open, and the ongoing Asian events. The five-time major winner will also skip the European indoor season and the ATP Finals in Turin.

"It’s been a fantastic season for me winning in Paris and New York and knowing that I will finish the year on top of the rankings is just a dream come true," said Zverev, who is set to face Alexander Bublik in the Shanghai round of 16. "So much work and effort have been put into achieving this goal, especially after coming back from the ankle injury [at the 2022 French Open semifinals]. I look forward to finishing the season in style."
