Ilhan Omar's Home Searched by Federal Agents Amid Immigration Paperwork Investigation

US federal agents executed a predawn raid on the home of Democratic US Representative Ilhan Omar on Monday, according to reports from US media. The search is reportedly connected to a criminal fraud investigation into Ms. Omar's immigration paperwork, which was completed by her late father when she was a child, Fox News stated, citing anonymous sources. Ms. Omar has consistently denied any wrongdoing, characterizing the allegations as false and politically motivated.

A representative from the Department of Justice informed AP that Homeland Security Investigations, under a judicially authorized search warrant secured by the Department of Justice, conducted an enforcement action as part of an ongoing federal investigation in the Washington, DC area. Neither the Justice Department nor a representative for Ms. Omar immediately responded to The National's request for comment.

Ms. Omar immigrated to the US as a child, fleeing civil war in Somalia. She became a US citizen at 17 in 2000 and was elected to represent Minnesota's 5th District in Congress in 2018. She is currently seeking re-election for the seat, with the election scheduled for November 3.

An outspoken critic of President Donald Trump, Ms. Omar has frequently been the target of his public statements. He has previously suggested she should leave the country and, in February, stated that Ms. Omar and fellow Democrat Rashida Tlaib should be “institutionalised” after they criticized his remarks during the State of the Union address. President Trump has also recently criticized Abdul El Sayed, who is running for a US Senate seat in Michigan, using anti-Muslim language and calling him a “jihadist lunatic.”
