Israeli military police have announced the opening of a criminal case regarding the death of five-year-old Hind Rajab, whose tragic killing and final moments in Gaza drew global outrage. The announcement came alongside reports of ongoing Israeli attacks in Gaza city that left at least nine people dead on Wednesday, following an earlier strike on a seafront cafe that claimed six more lives. These military actions continue despite renewed US-led efforts to advance peace talks in the region, where civilians face daily threats.

Hind Rajab and six of her family members were killed in January 2024 when their vehicle was fired upon by Israeli forces. Her harrowing phone calls to paramedics while trapped inside became the focal point of the film The Voice of Hind Rajab by Tunisian filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania. The incident is one of 150 reviewed by Israeli military prosecutors during the ongoing war. While Israel denies allegations of genocide or war crimes—noting that more than 73,000 Palestinians have died during the conflict—the ceasefire brokered by US President Donald Trump has failed to halt all casualties, with Palestinians reporting over 1,200 deaths since last October.

In its latest statement, the Israeli army revealed that five reviewed cases led to specific decisions, with the Hind Rajab incident and a March 2025 ambush in Tel Al Sultan, Rafah—which left 15 Palestinians dead—advancing to formal criminal investigations. Conversely, three other cases were closed, including the April 2024 strike that killed aid workers from the World Central Kitchen charity, as well as two incidents involving staff from Doctors Without Borders.

Regarding the Hind Rajab case, the military stated that troops fired on the family car because it was moving contrary to advance notices issued by the forces. Five individuals died immediately, while Hind and her 15-year-old cousin Layan survived briefly before calling the Palestinian Red Crescent. Both children, alongside two responding paramedics in an ambulance, were subsequently found dead. Open-source investigators alleged that over 300 bullets struck the vehicle, and audio recordings of Hind's pleas for help became a widespread symbol of the war's toll on children.

In the second investigated case in Tel Al Sultan, 15 Palestinians were reported killed during an attack on emergency vehicles, after which troops allegedly bulldozed the bodies and vehicles into a mass grave. While the Israeli army maintained that gunfire directed at emergency vehicles raised suspicions of criminal misconduct, it defended its closure of the World Central Kitchen case by arguing that commanders acted on suspicious indicators due to poor night visibility and alleged Hamas presence, determining their actions did not constitute a crime.
