Russian authorities have announced the arrest of a Japanese journalist on Sakhalin Island, accusing him of espionage. The Federal Security Service (FSB) stated on Tuesday that the journalist, identified as Imai Yuki of Japan’s Hokkaido Shimbun newspaper, is suspected of gathering information on Russia’s defense capabilities for Japanese intelligence. If convicted, he faces a prison sentence of up to 20 years.

The Japanese government is currently working to verify the reports of the detention, according to an official from Tokyo’s embassy in Moscow, as cited by Japan’s Kyodo news agency. The FSB reported that Imai Yuki was apprehended in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, the primary city on Sakhalin Island, as he was preparing to depart Russia. He was subsequently flown to Moscow, where a court ordered his detention pending the investigation.

Video footage released by Russia’s TASS news agency, attributed to the FSB, appears to show masked officers detaining the suspect in a hotel room and escorting him to an interrogation. The footage also depicts him boarding a plane with two FSB servicemen before being presented in a courtroom cage, where his custody was authorized for nearly two months.

This arrest occurs amidst heightened tensions between Russia and Japan, particularly following Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit in August to the Kuril Islands. This Pacific archipelago is controlled by Moscow but claimed by Japan, which refers to the southernmost four islands of the chain as the Northern Territories. The Sakhalin region encompasses Sakhalin Island and these disputed islands.

Russia and Japan have never signed a formal peace treaty following World War II, with the unresolved territorial dispute over the Kuril Islands remaining a significant obstacle. Since its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Russia has detained numerous foreign nationals on espionage allegations, including the high-profile case of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich in 2023, who was later freed in a prisoner exchange in August 2024.
