Singapore's economy experienced a significant growth of over 5 percent in the most recent quarter, propelled by an artificial intelligence-driven expansion that positions the city-state as one of the fastest-growing advanced economies globally. Gross domestic product (GDP) recorded a 5.4 percent year-on-year increase between July and September, a slight moderation from the 6.2 percent expansion seen in the second quarter, according to advance government estimates released on Wednesday. The manufacturing sector, heavily influenced by the nation's semiconductor industry, saw a robust growth of 7.5 percent. This expansion was attributed to increased output across "electronics, precision engineering, transport engineering and general manufacturing clusters," as stated by the Ministry of Trade and Industry, which helped to counterbalance declines in the chemicals and biomedical sectors. The construction sector, bolstered by AI-related investments such as data centres, expanded by 8.8 percent. Despite this strong economic performance, Singapore's central bank, the Monetary Authority of Singapore, maintained its monetary policy settings unchanged in its latest announcement on Wednesday. The bank cited expectations that the demand for AI-related technologies will moderate in 2027. The Monetary Authority of Singapore, which manages monetary policy via currency exchange rates, anticipates core inflation to average between 1.5–2.0 percent in 2026. The central bank noted in a statement, “Global AI-driven growth is expected to ease in the latter half of next year from its current exceptional pace, while higher interest rates, amid elevated inflation in the advanced economies, would weigh on final demand growth.” Singapore holds a prominent position in the global chip sector, a strength that has enabled it to navigate challenging economic conditions, including the energy shock stemming from the US-Israel war on Iran. Government figures indicate that the Southeast Asian city-state contributes approximately 10 percent to global semiconductor output and 20 percent to semiconductor equipment production. Yeow Hwee Chua, an assistant professor of economics at Nanyang Technological University, lauded Singapore’s economic achievements as “impressive for a high-income economy, especially given the uncertain global environment.” Professor Chua further commented to Al Jazeera, “The global technology investment boom has been an important driver. Strong demand for electronics has supported manufacturing and related wholesale trade, illustrating how Singapore benefits from its position in global supply chains.” The International Monetary Fund's (IMF) latest economic forecast projects Singapore's economy to grow by 5 percent in 2026, surpassing all other advanced economies except Taiwan. This projection marks Singapore's second consecutive year of growth exceeding 5 percent, a streak not seen since 2010 and 2011.
