United States President Donald Trump has announced that "massive" exploration for oil, gas, and minerals is slated to commence in Greenland. In a post on his Truth Social platform on Wednesday, Trump stated that the Arctic island, which is a self-governing Danish territory, possesses some of the world's largest reserves of "easily" extractable oil.
"Massive Oil, Gas, and Mineral Exploration is getting ready to begin in our new and beautiful Greenland!" Trump wrote on Truth Social. He further elaborated, quoting experts, "The amount of easily available Oil is far greater than that of almost … anywhere in the World." The President did not provide specific details regarding potential US involvement.
Last month, Trump finalized a security agreement with the leaders of Denmark and Greenland. This deal enhances the role of the US military on the island, paving the way for two new military bases and Trump's proposed "Golden Dome" missile defence system, while simultaneously reaffirming Danish sovereignty and Greenlanders' right to self-determination. This agreement was intended to resolve a nearly two-year-long dispute stemming from Trump's earlier refusal to rule out the possibility of the US forcibly acquiring Greenland.
In his social media update on Wednesday, Trump also lauded the security benefits for both the US and Europe derived from the previous month's pact, describing them as "second to none." He asserted that any aerial assault against the United States would inevitably have to traverse Greenland, positioning Washington to neutralize any such threat.
"Any future attack on the United States will have to come across Greenland, where our defence will routinely knock down drones, missiles, or any other form of weapon not yet even conceived," Trump stated. "It gives us time, location, and sightline, like nowhere else in the world!"
As of now, there has been no immediate response to the US President's post from the leaders of Greenland or Denmark.
