The highly anticipated Saudi Pro League (SPL) clash between Cristiano Ronaldo's Al Nassr and Asian champions Al Ahli has been postponed. This fixture, originally scheduled for Thursday, is among three SPL games that have been rescheduled due to what the league has cited as "logistical considerations." These considerations are specifically related to ensuring adequate rest periods for players, rather than any security concerns in Riyadh.
This postponement comes in the wake of heightened tensions in the Saudi capital, where alerts were sounded on Wednesday due to intensified fighting between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels. Previously, an SPL fixture in Abha, scheduled for Sunday, was postponed as a direct result of this situation. Abha is located approximately 200 kilometers from the Yemen border. It is noteworthy that matches in Riyadh did proceed as planned.
Both Al Nassr, playing at home, and Al Ahli were involved in AFC Champions League action on Monday night. While Al Ahli's match in Dubai against Al Wasl proceeded without issue, Al Nassr's game in Riyadh experienced a one-hour delay due to an alert.
In its statement regarding the postponement of the three matches planned for this week, the SPL emphasized that the reasons were linked to "the mandatory minimum rest period between matches." The affected fixtures all involve teams that participated in the Champions League: Al Hilal and Al Nassr (based in Riyadh), and Al Ahli and Al Ittihad (from Jeddah).
The league stated, "The [SPL] has rescheduled three Roshn Saudi League Matchweek 9 fixtures for logistical considerations, taking into account the mandatory minimum rest period between matches." The statement further detailed, "Two fixtures; Al Riyadh against Al Hilal and Al Ittihad against Al Shabab will now be played on Saturday, December 19, 2026, while Al Ahli versus Al Nassr will be played on Saturday, March 6, 2027." The remaining games for Matchweek 9 will proceed as originally scheduled.
The SPL further explained that the decision was made after considering "the mandatory minimum rest period between matches in addition to organisational and operational requirements for the matches." The league also noted that "The changes are made in accordance with approved regulatory procedures for managing the competition's schedule, factoring in clubs' various logistical considerations for matches."
The Al Ahli-Al Nassr encounter was particularly anticipated, marking the first meeting between the two clubs since their contentious match last season at Al Awwal Park. During that game, Al Nassr notably declined to form a guard of honour for their visitors, who had recently secured their second consecutive AFC Champions League title. The previous match saw tempers flare, with Ronaldo referencing his five UEFA Champions League titles in response to taunts from Al Ahli fans. Al Ahli's Merih Demiral also reportedly displayed his Champions League winner's medal during the post-game melee.
