G20 finance ministers and central bank governors have convened in Bangkok, Thailand, on Thursday, facing a global economic landscape marked by uncertainty, significantly influenced by the ongoing US-Israel war on Iran. These crucial meetings are being held concurrently with the annual gatherings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, which are taking place in the Thai capital from October 12 to October 18.

The G20, a significant economic forum, comprises 19 major economies including the United States, China, the United Kingdom, Australia, Brazil, India, Japan, Indonesia, and Saudi Arabia, alongside the European Union and the African Union. With the US currently holding the rotating presidency, the G20 nations collectively represent approximately 85 percent of the global gross domestic product (GDP) and three-quarters of international trade. Established in 1999 following the Asian Financial Crisis, the G20 initially served as a platform for finance ministers and central bank governors to address shared economic challenges, later expanding to include national leaders.

The IMF, headquartered in Washington, DC, functions as an international financial institution dedicated to fostering global cooperation in monetary policy, trade, and economic growth. Its membership encompasses nearly all sovereign states worldwide, with notable exceptions like North Korea, Cuba, the Vatican City, and Monaco. The World Bank, also based in Washington, DC, primarily provides loans and grants to developing countries and boasts 189 member nations. Both the IMF and the World Bank were established at the 1944 Bretton Woods conference in the US, convened by the Allied Powers to shape the post-World War II international financial order.

A significant number of G20 finance ministers and central bank governors are present in Bangkok, joined by IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva and World Bank Group President Ajay Banga. Notably, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will not be attending, despite representing the world's largest economy and the current G20 chair. US officials have cited
