As the November 3 US congressional midterm elections draw near, a significant portion of American voters are expressing deep dissatisfaction with President Donald Trump's policies and are calling for substantial change in the nation's governance. A new poll by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research indicates that 80 percent of Americans believe the country requires considerable alteration or even a "complete and total upheaval" in its direction.

The survey, which polled over 1,100 US adults, revealed that Democrats and independents are more inclined than Republicans to advocate for a complete overhaul. However, even within the Republican base, there is a discernible desire for change, with 45 percent seeking substantial modifications and 13 percent pushing for upheaval. These findings suggest a widespread demand for legislative adjustments that could potentially impact the Republican Party's hold on power in both houses of Congress.

Economic concerns appear to be a primary driver of voter sentiment, with 85 percent of respondents identifying the economy as a crucial factor in their voting decisions. Approximately eight in 10 registered voters disapprove of President Trump's handling of the cost of living, and a similar proportion, about three-quarters, are unhappy with his economic performance. Only about one-third of registered voters hold a favorable view of the president or approve of his overall performance.

The poll also indicates a preference among more voters for Democrats to gain control of Congress, alongside a more negative perception of Republicans. While immigration and crime rates are significant concerns for 45 percent of voters, these issues are disproportionately prioritized by Republican voters. Conversely, Democratic voters are more likely to cite healthcare as their top priority.

Emerging issues such as artificial intelligence, ranked as a substantial concern by 35 percent of voters, and transgender issues, a priority for 12 percent, garnered less immediate attention. Healthcare remains a top issue for 69 percent of voters, while the war on Iran is cited by 64 percent.

Despite these varied grievances, a strong majority of voters across the political spectrum value civic participation. About two-thirds of registered voters consider voting in the upcoming election "extremely" important, with an additional two in 10 deeming it "very" important. This sentiment is particularly pronounced among Democratic voters, 75 percent of whom view voting as "extremely" important, compared to roughly 60 percent of Republican respondents.
