Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has issued an apology on Thursday for his critical remarks directed at the club's hierarchy, following discussions with manager Michael Carrick and senior club officials. This comes after the team's Champions League defeat against Atletico Madrid.
Martinez met with Carrick and club executives subsequent to a training session, two days after he stated that the club required increased investment to compete at the highest level. These comments were made following Tuesday's 2-0 loss.
"Today I met with the club’s leadership and the manager," Martinez shared in an Instagram post, marking his second statement since the initial interview. "It was a very positive conversation where we were able to exchange views and speak openly about what happened after Tuesday’s game."
A source within the club indicated that any internal disciplinary measures would be kept private. The source also added that the decision to apologize publicly was Martinez's own and that all parties involved consider the matter resolved.
According to reports from British media, including the BBC, United imposed a fine on the defender for his public outburst. Martinez acknowledged that his frustration stemming from the defeat had led him to overreact and expressed regret for choosing an inappropriate time and place to voice his feelings.
"Everyone knows that I am a passionate person and that I live football with great intensity," he stated. "The frustration of the defeat led me to express how I felt at a time and place that perhaps were not the right ones, and for that I want to apologise."
In his post-game interview, the Argentina international had specifically mentioned director of football Jason Wilcox, asserting that United needed additional signings to rival other clubs and to assemble a squad capable of challenging in European competitions.
Martinez further commented that his remarks did not align with the unity necessary at Old Trafford, emphasizing his conviction that everyone at the club is dedicated to achieving the same objectives.
"Our club is at its best when we are all united, and I recognise that my words in that moment did not help with that," he said. "I know that every single person at Manchester United is doing everything possible to achieve our shared ambition, bringing the success that this club and its supporters deserve."
Martinez concluded his statement by indicating a desire to move past the incident. "With this situation now behind us, we are fully focused on winning together."
Manchester United currently sits 13th in the Premier League standings after six games, marking their worst start in 40 years. The team is scheduled to play against Leeds United, who are in seventh place, on Sunday.
