A tragic shooting incident at a primary school in Bend, Oregon, has resulted in the deaths of four individuals, including three young children and a teacher. Police have identified the assailant as a 16-year-old boy. Officials reported that an armed bystander pursued the attacker into the school and fatally shot him.

The victims included children aged five, eight, and 11, along with a teacher. Another teacher and a seven-year-old student sustained critical injuries and were transported to the hospital, according to Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz during a media conference. The attacker reportedly gained entry by shooting through locked doors, though further details were not immediately provided.

Oregon Governor Tina Kotek commended the armed bystander for their heroic actions in preventing further loss of life at Silver Rail Elementary School. "No parent should have to have this kind of day, and no community should have to live through this kind of day," Governor Kotek stated. "As we learn more about the children and the adults who have been killed or injured, and their families and their loved ones, we are going to do a lot of crying, and we're going to cry together, and we're probably going to cry privately."

Bend, a city of approximately 100,000 residents located in rural central Oregon, is situated about 280km southeast of Portland. Silver Rail Elementary School serves students from kindergarten through fifth grade, catering to children aged five to 11, with an enrollment of about 450 pupils and 40 staff members.

The incident began around 1 p.m. when police received a call reporting a man had shot into a car at the school. Shortly after, emergency dispatchers received further calls indicating a person had entered the school and started shooting. Responding officers arrived within three minutes to find the suspect deceased from a gunshot wound.
