Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that a Russian citizen has been arrested in Warsaw over an alleged plot to kill an American citizen of Ukrainian origin who was considered inconvenient to the Putin regime. Speaking to reporters during a meeting for the European Group of Five, Tusk did not identify the target or provide specific details about the plot, but noted the arrest took place on August 7.
Tusk described the incident as a very dangerous signal, marking the first known instance of someone acting on orders from Russia to target a US citizen on the territory of another NATO country. He praised Poland's security services, including the Internal Security Agency and the police, for successfully preventing the execution at the last minute.
Experts have warned of a rising tide of threats from Russia, which faces accusations of targeting critics abroad through contract killers and poisonings. The arrest comes as European nations express growing alarm over Moscow's aggressive posture amid the ongoing war in Ukraine, which began with the Russian invasion on February 24, 2022. While Russian President Vladimir Putin has blamed NATO for the conflict, Western allies have continued their political and military support for Ukraine.
In the wake of the arrest, Poland and Baltic states have ramped up security at key infrastructure sites. German authorities also reported a new level of danger following the discovery of an explosive-laden drone near an airport, while Lithuanian Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas warned of potential false flag operations. Tomasz Siemoniak, a Polish minister overseeing security services, confirmed on the social media platform X that the operation was executed in cooperation with US authorities.
