Travellers flying in and out of the UAE should be prepared for potential flight delays as the country experiences seasonal weather conditions that are reducing visibility in various regions. The General Civil Aviation Authority has issued a warning, indicating that the changing weather patterns may impact airport operations nationwide, leading to possible disruptions.

These atmospheric conditions are a common occurrence during the autumn season in the UAE. In response, airlines and airport operators have implemented measures to manage the situation, adhering to established operational procedures and aviation safety requirements, according to the authority. They have stressed that any service interruptions will be handled strictly in accordance with safety protocols.

Passengers are strongly advised to stay informed by checking for updates through their respective airline and airport official channels.

Understanding UAE Fog: The cooler months in the UAE are often accompanied by frequent fog. This phenomenon can blanket the coastal skyscrapers as well as the desert dunes. Approximately 95% of the fog observed in the UAE is classified as radiation fog. It typically forms in the early morning hours when the Earth's surface, having absorbed heat during the day, radiates it back into the air, causing water droplets to condense. This type of fog usually dissipates as the sun's heat increases.

Advection fog is another type of fog that can be seen in the UAE. It occurs when warm, moist air moves over a cooler surface, leading to the formation of water vapour.

The impact of heavy fog was evident earlier this week when authorities in Abu Dhabi reduced speed limits, and a safety warning was issued in Dubai. Motorists in certain areas of Abu Dhabi received alerts about speed limits being lowered to 80kph, while drivers in Dubai were urged to exercise extreme caution due to poor visibility on the roads.

Since record-keeping began in 2006, the UAE has averaged 132 days of fog formation annually. The most prolonged period of fog and mist was recorded in January 2010, with 17 days of fog and five days of mist.
