Kosovo authorities have successfully recovered the remains of more than 20 individuals across three suspected mass graves, which are believed to hold victims from the ethnic conflicts of the 1990s.

A joint statement released on Wednesday by prosecutors, police officials, and forensic investigators confirmed that teams from the forensic medicine institute discovered skeletal remains estimated to belong to at least 23 individuals. Full identification will be conducted following the completion of comprehensive forensic examinations and standard procedures.

The conflict between independence-seeking ethnic Albanian rebels and Serbian forces from 1998 to 1999 resulted in approximately 13,000 deaths and left 4,000 people missing. In the decades since, ongoing efforts by officials to locate mass graves have uncovered thousands of victims, though roughly 1,600 individuals remain unaccounted for.

Excavations in the northern Zubin Potok area began two weeks ago as teams searched for missing ethnic Albanian victims. According to a statement made by Kosovo’s acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti during the excavation, the remains most likely belong to 23 Albanians who were violently abducted in the town of Mitrovica and subsequently executed in the spring of 1999.

Prosecutors indicated that all recovered remains have been submitted for DNA testing, cautioning that the procedure could require several months to complete. Additionally, police have arrested three local men in connection with the case on suspicion of committing war crimes against the civilian population.
