A devastating fire has erupted at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Wainwright in Alberta, Canada, resulting in fatalities and injuries, as confirmed by a government minister. Minister of National Defence David McGuinty stated on Saturday, "I’m saddened to share that there have been both fatalities and injuries as a result of an incident on the base." McGuinty did not disclose the number of casualties or the cause of the blaze, characterizing the situation as "very, very active and delicate." The Royal Canadian Mounted Police are reportedly involved in the ongoing investigation. The Canadian Armed Forces, alongside federal, provincial, and local authorities, are actively coordinating the emergency response. The nearby community of Wainwright has offered crucial support, providing hospital and firefighting assistance. The Municipal District of Wainwright reported that the fire breached the base’s perimeter earlier on Saturday and was spreading rapidly due to high winds. Firefighters from multiple jurisdictions were on the scene, with no evacuation order issued at the time.

Prime Minister Mark Carney had previously referred to the incident as a "serious incident" that caused the fire, expressing on social media, "Our thoughts are with all the brave women and men affected." Alberta Premier Danielle Smith described the fire as "significant and tragic," noting its impact on numerous military personnel. Opposition Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre confirmed he had spoken with Carney and McGuinty to offer support, urging followers on social media to "Pray for Wainwright, everyone," and to adhere to emergency instructions and keep roads clear for first responders.

CFB Wainwright, located approximately 180 km (112 miles) southeast of Edmonton, is recognized as one of Canada's busiest military training facilities, preparing soldiers for combat operations. It houses the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre, which conducts realistic battlefield exercises, and the 3rd Canadian Division Training Centre. This incident occurs just two days before Albertans are set to vote on a potential referendum regarding secession from Canada. Last week, Prime Minister Carney emphasized national unity in his Thanksgiving message.
