Max D Lederer Jr, the longtime publisher of Stars and Stripes, has resigned following disagreements with the leadership of the Defense Department. In a memo to staff and an interview with the publication, Lederer announced his retirement, signaling friction with the administration of President Donald Trump over government pushes for increased editorial control.

Lederer stated in his memo that his leadership philosophy and understanding of the mission of Stars and Stripes fundamentally differed from the direction set by the Department of Defence. This development follows criticisms from Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, who accused the outlet of promoting "woke distractions" and highlighted dissatisfaction with reports detailing poor conditions and declining morale on the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier amid the war on Iran.

Founded in 1861, Stars and Stripes has historically maintained editorial independence despite receiving significant government funding. However, critics note that pressures on the news outlet have intensified. During the first Trump presidency, the Pentagon attempted to eliminate funding, though President Donald Trump pledged to protect the budget. In January, the second-term Defense Department sought to align the paper more closely with government priorities, a move described by Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell as returning the publication to its original mission.

Concurrently, the Pentagon dismissed Jacqueline Smith, the newspaper’s ombudsman tasked with protecting reporting from political interference, drawing widespread concern over press freedoms. Hegseth has also overseen broader restrictions on journalists, including limiting access to the Pentagon and targeting Diversity, Equity and Inclusion policies within the military. Meanwhile, as the war on Iran continues following its launch on February 28, Stars and Stripes remains dedicated to reporting on the realities faced by service members, drawing criticism from President Donald Trump and his allies.
