Gabby Williams was the standout scorer for the Golden State Valkyries in their Game 1 victory against the Atlanta Dream in the WNBA Finals, held at Chase Center in San Francisco, California. Williams netted a game-high 26 points, crucially sinking four free throws in the final 78 seconds to secure a 68-64 win.

Williams, who was the runner-up to Atlanta's Angel Reese for Defensive Player of the Year, has proven to be a significant offensive asset for the Valkyries during the playoffs. On a night where the home team struggled with shooting, she shouldered the scoring burden, as no other Valkyries player reached double figures.

Despite a slow start, with Williams scoring no points in the first quarter and the Valkyries beginning tentatively in front of a loud crowd at Chase Center, the team found its rhythm. "Once we all started having fun and the excitement got out, we started to kind of find our way," Williams commented after the game. She exploded for 16 points in the second quarter, acknowledging the team's shooting difficulties but emphasizing their defensive strength. "There was a lid on that basket tonight, but that’s why we rely on our defence," she added.

With Golden State trailing by one point and just 1 minute and 18 seconds left on the clock, Williams grabbed a crucial rebound off an Atlanta miss by Allisha Gray and drew a foul from Reese. Her subsequent free throws put the Valkyries ahead 65-64, and she sealed the victory with two more free throws with only 4.1 seconds remaining.

"It came down to getting stops and that’s been our bread-and-butter all year," Williams stated, highlighting the team's defensive prowess, which has seen them allow fewer points than any other WNBA team this season. "That’s why we harp on it so much, because we’ve built such great defensive habits."

Allisha Gray, the Dream's leading scorer, returned from a hand injury that had sidelined her for two games, contributing 19 points. However, she was unable to score in the fourth quarter, a period where Atlanta managed only eight points in total, making just two of their 19 field goal attempts. Angel Reese contributed 14 points and 12 rebounds for Atlanta, while Rhyne Howard added 12 points.

Reese acknowledged her own performance, stating, "I don’t think they really did anything. Maybe that was just on me; I wasn’t aggressive enough with the ball and trying to get the ball and get to my spot. I’m definitely going to do a better job of that next game."

The Valkyries will host Game 2 of the best-of-seven series on Monday. Both franchises are vying for their first WNBA title. The Dream have previously reached the Finals three times without a championship, most recently in 2013. The Valkyries, an expansion team that made the playoffs in their inaugural season last year, are now competing for the title in just their second year.
