Majed Al Ansari, the spokesperson for Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has issued a stern warning that unresolved global crises pose a significant threat to international peace. He emphasized Qatar's unwavering commitment to diplomatic solutions, even amidst regional tensions and attacks on its territory.
In an interview with Al Arabiya, Al Ansari stated that Gulf states are dedicated to resolving conflicts through diplomacy. He highlighted that the failure to address and invest in peace for longstanding issues is a direct contributor to the current threats against international security. Qatar, he noted, has consistently pursued peace while firmly rejecting attacks directed at the nation.
Al Ansari underscored that achieving peace is a costly endeavor, and Qatar has shouldered substantial responsibility in its pursuit. However, he clarified that this commitment should not be misconstrued as an acceptance of attacks against the country. "Peace is a very costly commodity, and someone must bear the cost of this peace," Al Ansari remarked, adding that Qatar has incurred significant costs from the outset of its peace-building efforts across various issues. "But this does not mean in any way that we accept such attacks on our country," he reiterated.
He further explained that Qatar's diplomatic initiatives have proceeded in tandem with the operations of its armed forces and security institutions, particularly following recent attacks. The diplomatic response, he said, was coordinated with the Qatari Armed Forces and the national security system to ensure that attacks were effectively stopped, deterred, and prevented from recurring. Al Ansari also stressed the critical importance of international clarity on these matters.
"Qatar continues its efforts for peace, regardless of anyone who tries to divert it from that path," Al Ansari affirmed, noting the unified stance of Qatar's leadership and officials regarding the nation's role in international peace efforts.
Addressing the broader regional landscape, Al Ansari attributed current crises to the consequences of neglecting long-standing problems. He pointed out that recent statements and positions from Gulf states have placed a strong emphasis on fortifying the regional security architecture, enhancing Gulf leadership, and maintaining robust engagement with regional and international partners. "Today, we are reaping the consequences of others’ mistakes, in leaving many of these crises unaddressed," Al Ansari observed. He cautioned that the situation should not be perceived as a transient crisis destined for historical footnotes, but rather as an issue with profound implications for the region's future and global security.
Al Ansari questioned the international community's adequacy in addressing the risks posed by multiple, ongoing conflicts. Drawing a parallel to historical underestimations of major wars, he posed a provocative question: "So, is it possible that we are now in the first year of the Third World War?" He suggested this scenario could become a tangible concern if the international community fails to confront the crises at hand. He also identified a broader crisis in international peace efforts, citing the absence of comprehensive peace agreements over the past decade as a serious challenge to the global security system. Al Ansari lamented that global peace has become perceived as a commodity monopolized by certain actors, rather than a shared global responsibility.
Despite these grave concerns, Al Ansari asserted that military action should not be considered the sole recourse for nations facing conflict. While acknowledging its occasional necessity, he reiterated Qatar's and other Gulf states' firm commitment to peace and diplomatic resolutions. "At no point can the only option available to the peoples of the region or the peoples of the world be the military option," he stated. "Yes, sometimes the military option is a necessary option. But our countries and the Gulf states are peace-loving countries."
Al Ansari highlighted the significant mediation roles played by Gulf states in various global crises, including the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, and disputes in Latin America and Asia. He affirmed that the Gulf's involvement in seeking diplomatic solutions and peaceful conflict resolution remains a consistent feature of international affairs. "The Gulf’s involvement and imprint in diplomatic solutions and resolving crises through peaceful means are always present," he said. He further explained that diplomacy is invariably the primary choice when crises affect the Gulf region directly, noting that all Gulf states have actively engaged in diplomatic efforts even amidst current conflicts. "Undoubtedly, the first option is always to reach a diplomatic solution," Al Ansari concluded.
His remarks reinforce Qatar's established position advocating for sustained peace efforts alongside measures to safeguard national sovereignty and security. Al Ansari concluded by calling for enhanced regional cooperation, stronger Gulf leadership, and continuous diplomatic engagement, reiterating his warning that the failure to resolve crises could have repercussions extending far beyond immediate conflicts, impacting the future of international peace and security.
