A solemn funeral ceremony was held in Gaza City's Daraj neighborhood for 75 Palestinians whose remains were recently discovered beneath the debris of homes and buildings destroyed since the commencement of Israel's war on Gaza in October 2023, as reported by the Ministry of Health. Hundreds gathered to participate in the procession before the remains were interred at the Sheikh Radwan Cemetery on Sunday morning. The majority of those identified were residents of the Daraj neighborhood, located in the northeastern sector of Gaza City. According to Al Jazeera correspondent Nour Khaled, many of the recovered remains belonged to women and children who were reportedly in their homes when they were struck. The remains, which included body parts and personal effects, were draped in Palestinian flags prior to burial.
Abdullah al-Majdalawi, the public relations and media director for Gaza’s Civil Defence, informed the Turkish state news agency Anadolu that the recovery efforts over the past weeks had unearthed these remains from several devastated residences in Daraj. He explained that these buildings were bombed during the initial months of the war while people were still inside, and that the victims represented approximately 20 Palestinian families, some of whom had been displaced to these locations. Al-Majdalawi also noted that the recovery operations continue to face significant challenges due to a scarcity of essential equipment and heavy machinery.
The Civil Defence initiated the second phase of its recovery operations in July. Their first operation in November 2025 successfully recovered 333 bodies and the remains of 559 individuals. The Civil Defence estimates that the remains of an additional 8,000 Palestinians may still be trapped under the rubble across Gaza. The UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, has indicated that approximately 200,000 buildings in Gaza have sustained damage or have been completely destroyed. The total Palestinian death toll since the war began three years ago stands at least at 74,475.
