Egyptian authorities have reported that five individuals, described as "highly dangerous criminal elements," were killed during a police raid that also resulted in the seizure of over 250kg of drugs and significant quantities of weapons. The Interior Ministry of Egypt stated that the confiscated drugs included 42,000 tablets, with an estimated value of 155 million Egyptian pounds, approximately $2.9 million USD. The five individuals who lost their lives in the operation had previously received prison sentences for serious offenses such as murder, attempted murder, drug trafficking, armed robbery, and firearms violations.
The operation targeted "criminal hotbeds" across three distinct areas, leading to the arrest of several other suspects, according to the ministry. Investigations had uncovered networks involved in smuggling drugs, tablets, and weapons throughout various regions of Egypt. In addition to the drugs, the raid yielded 76 weapon parts. Authorities released images showcasing three cars and two motorbikes that were part of the seizure.
While the specific types of drugs seized were not identified, Egypt, similar to other Middle Eastern nations, has been actively working to curb the trade of Captagon, a highly addictive methamphetamine. This incident follows a recent conviction where Egyptian TV presenter Sarah Khalifa and 11 other defendants were sentenced to death for their involvement in an organized criminal group engaged in the manufacturing and trafficking of synthetic drugs. Egypt's legal framework permits the death penalty for severe crimes, including drug trafficking, though executions are contingent upon further judicial and legal review.
