An Al Jazeera investigation has cast doubt on official Israeli accounts of an attack by settlers on Palestinian olive harvesters and American photojournalist Heidi Levine. The incident occurred on Friday in Khirbet Abu Falah, northeast of Ramallah, in the occupied West Bank. The Al Jazeera Data Journalism Unit utilized open-source verification and analysis of visual and geographic evidence to challenge narratives presented by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office and the Israeli army.

Official Israeli statements have varied, with Netanyahu's office questioning the involvement of Israeli settlers and the Israeli army suggesting military intervention during a confrontation between Palestinians and settlers. However, verified footage and mapped coordinates indicate a coordinated assault by masked settlers. Crucially, Israeli military vehicles were observed passing the scene shortly before the attack without intervening.

The attack on October 16 resulted in veteran Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine, 63, sustaining a broken rib, four fractured vertebrae, and injuries requiring hand surgery, despite wearing a press vest. To ascertain the facts, the Data Journalism Unit meticulously monitored and analyzed over 20 videos and photos from journalists and witnesses. The team independently verified the footage, established a chronological order, communicated with local journalists, and mapped key locations.

Geography of the Attack: Geospatial analysis precisely located the settler outpost from which the attackers originated, the harvesting land, and the site of the assault on Levine. The attack occurred at coordinates 32°01’13.5″N 35°18’40.7″E, approximately 455 meters southwest of an outpost near the Misholash settlement and 120 meters north of the olive harvesting land. The analysis also identified Palestinian storage rooms for agricultural tools near the outpost, which local journalists report are now occupied by settlers. The outpost is situated in Area B under the Oslo Accords, where the Palestinian Authority handles civil affairs and Israel maintains security control. While a few settlers typically occupy the outpost, reports indicate that 50 to 100 settlers gather there from other outposts before descending on the fields during such incidents. Additional settler tents on an adjacent mountain also serve as gathering points for attacks on olive harvesters.

Chronological Evidence of Escalation: Footage reviewed chronologically reveals a gradual escalation. Movements began around 8 am with a 4x4 vehicle carrying settlers, followed by six motorcycles heading towards the area opposite the harvesters. By 9 am, approximately 30 settlers were seen gathering near the farmers. Al Jazeera correspondent Tharwat Shaqra reported that Israeli military vehicles passed through the area before the settlers advanced towards journalists and farmers, suggesting a potential
