The Future Investment Initiative (FII), Saudi Arabia's premier conference, has been postponed due to a recent escalation in Houthi attacks targeting the kingdom. The annual event, originally slated for October 26-29 in Riyadh, will now take place in 2027. The FII Institute announced this decision in an advisory on Monday, stating that the new dates for the tenth edition, themed 'The Power of Legacy,' would be communicated shortly. Organizers cited the need to ensure the milestone event meets the expected scale, quality, and impact for all stakeholders.
This postponement follows a series of missile and drone strikes by Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi group, including attacks on Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport. These incidents have reportedly disrupted air travel and heightened security concerns among international executives and investors, leading some to reconsider their attendance, according to the FT.
The 10th FII was anticipated to convene high-ranking government officials, global financiers, and corporate leaders, such as BlackRock CEO Larry Fink and JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, to explore investment prospects and economic development. Since its inception in 2017, FII has served as a crucial platform for Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's Vision 2030 initiative, which aims to diversify the Saudi economy away from oil and attract foreign investment.
The delay of FII is part of a broader trend affecting international events due to the ongoing conflict. Saudi Arabia and the EU have already postponed a planned summit, and several sporting and cultural events have faced delays or cancellations due to security apprehensions, as reported by Reuters. Additionally, Saudi Arabia announced on Monday the cancellation of two other events: Intersec Saudi Arabia and the Saudi Retail Forum. Intersec Saudi Arabia 2026, initially scheduled for November 16-18, is now set for October 2027, according to organizer Messe Frankfurt Saudi Arabia. The Saudi Retail Forum, planned for November 19, has been rescheduled to March 2027.
Messe Frankfurt Saudi Arabia stated that the decision for Intersec Saudi Arabia was made after close monitoring of recent developments in Saudi Arabia and in coordination with venue, local government partners, and event stakeholders. The postponement prioritizes the safety and security of all participants while aiming to maintain the event's international scope and high-caliber attendance.
