Independent member for Indi, Helen Haines, was the target of a deliberate car ramming incident outside her office in Wangaratta on Monday, according to the Australian Federal Police (AFP). The AFP stated that the attack appears to be an isolated event with no further known threats.
Haines, 65, was struck by a Toyota Land Cruiser SUV approximately 200km northwest of Melbourne. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the act as "deliberate," emphasizing it was not an accident. The independent federal MP for the Victorian seat of Indi underwent surgery overnight and is reported to be in critical condition in a Melbourne hospital, having lost a leg.
The suspect, identified by local media as a 43-year-old man from Tarrawingee, Victoria, is in police custody. Federal and state police are considering charges, including "causing harm to a Commonwealth public official," which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years' imprisonment.
Prime Minister Albanese told ABC national broadcaster that the vehicle performed a U-turn before hitting Haines, reinforcing the deliberate nature of the attack. The motive of the alleged attacker remains unknown.
Witnesses reported that Haines was struck twice before a bystander, Ricky Jefferies, intervened. Jefferies, who runs a barber shop, restrained the attacker and disarmed him of a knife, initially mistaking the incident for a car accident. He described the event as "crazy" and stated he acted to do what he could.
Foreign Minister Penny Wong expressed shock at the "deeply disturbing attack" and wished Haines a full recovery. The incident follows a documented rise in threats and abuse directed at Australian politicians in recent years. Politicians have traditionally maintained public accessibility without security, a situation Prime Minister Albanese noted has seen an increase in "temperature" recently.
Helen Haines, a former nurse and midwife, entered parliament in 2019. She is known for her policy positions on the environment and transparency, and for her advocacy for stronger climate action, political transparency, and cracking down on corruption.
