The heir to the British throne is set to meet the Sultan of Oman at his London residence today, underscoring the enduring presence of Muscat's rulers in the British capital. Prince Charles and Sultan Haitham will be welcomed by King Charles III at Windsor Castle, marking the commencement of the Sultan's state visit to the UK. This state visit follows a significant gap, as the last Omani Sultan to undertake such a visit to the UK was Sultan Al Qaboos in 1982, who met with Queen Elizabeth II. King Charles and Sultan Haitham are scheduled to spend Tuesday at Windsor Castle, with plans for a state banquet and engagements involving members of the royal family. King Charles previously hosted Sultan Haitham for tea at Windsor Castle in 2026 during a private visit. The Sultan's London residence, identified in UK planning documents as Grove House in Regent's Park, is considered a gesture of respect. Sultan Haitham of Oman arrived at Stansted Airport on Monday for his state visit to the UK. The villa, constructed between 1822 and 1824 for geologist Bellas Greenough and designed by architect Decimus Burton, is a Grade I-listed building situated along the Grand Union Canal. According to Neil Tomlinson Architects, which refurbished the roof in 2014, it is believed to be the most preserved of the historic villas surrounding Regent's Park. The four-acre property boasts one of the city's largest private gardens, featuring an ornamental garden with outbuildings, including stables, an annex, and garden follies, as noted by the architecture practice. The exact date of Sultan Qaboos's purchase of Grove House is not publicly known. However, the architectural history website London Canals reports that the property was sold in 1993 for £25 million, making it London's most expensive property at that time. Council planning documents from that period refer to the house as the "official London residence of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, the Ruler of Oman, on his visits to the capital." Notable guests at the residence have included former prime minister David Cameron during his tenure as opposition leader. Planning documents from over a decade ago indicated that the house was utilized by visiting Omani officials. A statement opposing the installation of a public cycle stand mentioned, "His Majesty routinely receives guests at Grove House who, by their nature, are also heads of state, foreign dignitaries and senior representatives of the House of Windsor and the government of the United Kingdom." The Sultan possesses two residences in the capital. King Charles III met Sultan Haitham at Windsor Castle in 2025. The welcome for the Sultan by King Charles and Queen Camilla will take place at the Royal Dais in Windsor, accompanied by a Royal Salute at Home Park in Windsor and the Tower of London. The royal party, including Prince William and Princess Catherine, along with the Sultan, will proceed to the castle via a carriage procession through Windsor town. As Prince of Wales, King Charles visited Oman four times and traveled to Muscat to offer condolences following the passing of Sultan Qaboos in January 2020. Queen Camilla, during her time as Duchess of Cornwall, accompanied the King on a two-day visit to Oman in November 2016. At Windsor Castle's quadrangle, a guard of honour will render a royal salute, and the regimental band will perform the Omani and British national anthems upon the carriage procession's arrival. The Sultan, accompanied by the King, will inspect the guard of honour before rejoining the Queen and the Prince and Princess of Wales to observe the military march-past. Following lunch in the state dining room, the King and Queen will present an exhibition of items related to Oman from the Royal Collection in the Green Drawing Room. Enhanced security measures will be in place around Windsor Castle throughout the visit, according to a Thames Valley Police spokesman, who highlighted the force's extensive experience in policing royal events in Windsor. The Sultan of Oman is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Andy Burnham at Downing Street on Wednesday. Diplomatic meetings between the foreign ministers of both countries are also anticipated on the same day, near the King's London residence. Sultan Haitham was the first leader hosted at Downing Street by former prime minister Keir Starmer in August 2024, following his election. They met again in July of this year, shortly before Mr Starmer's resignation. Sultan Haitham will attend a banquet at Guildhall, hosted by the Lady Mayor and the City of London Corporation, with the Duke of Gloucester also in attendance. The Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford will also feature in the visit, as the Sultan tours the Here East business and culture campus to observe "one of the world's most successful post-Olympic regeneration projects." He will also examine small to medium-sized businesses focused on energy, renewables, technology, space, and defence within the workspace Plexal. This visit occurs at a critical juncture for UK-Oman relations, particularly concerning the crisis in the Gulf and Iran's blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. Oman has played a crucial role as a mediator, establishing an alternative traffic system for the Strait of Hormuz with Iran and facilitating discussions with the Iran-backed Houthis during the war in Yemen. The late Sultan Qaboos maintained a strong relationship with Queen Elizabeth II. Their first meeting was in Muscat in 1979, during which she sailed the Gulf on the royal yacht Britannia. In 2010, Queen Elizabeth undertook a state visit to Oman, where the Sultan presented her with an engraved gold vase. Reflecting on their relationship, Queen Elizabeth stated after Sultan Qaboos's death in 2020, "My state visit to Oman in 2010 remains a cherished memory. May the long history of loyal friendship between our two countries continue."
