Sarah Helm, a writer and the wife of UK National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell, has publicly called for the lifting of the UK's ban on the Palestine Action group. This stance comes after a police investigation into her social media posts. The UK has proscribed the pro-Palestine group, classifying it as a terrorist organization, making any expression of support a criminal offense. Authorities recently concluded their investigation into an earlier post by Ms. Helm, determining that no action would be taken as it did not meet the criminal threshold.

On Monday, Ms. Helm expressed her support for lifting the ban by asking, “Where do I sign?” She was responding to a letter advocating for the ban's removal and supporting Irish author Sally Rooney and her publisher Faber, who had decided not to supply Rooney's books to UK retailers. Ms. Rooney had been cautioned that her plan to donate earnings from sales could be deemed a criminal offense.

Ms. Helm, a former Middle East correspondent for The Independent, had previously written, “God help us authors who support Palestine and Palestine Action,” in reaction to a clip criticizing Ms. Rooney. Her public support for Palestine Action, which was banned in the UK in 2025 following an attack on a UK airbase, has raised questions about potential implications for Mr. Powell's government role. Reports indicate that over 3,500 individuals have been arrested in the UK for supporting Palestine Action, primarily for holding placards at demonstrations.

This situation unfolds against a backdrop of recent UK foreign policy actions. Last month, the UK imposed sanctions targeting illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, with Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband condemning the Israeli government's inaction regarding the “ethnic cleansing” of Palestinians. Mr. Powell had visited Israel earlier this month in an effort to persuade the Israeli government against closing the UK’s Consulate General in Jerusalem, a facility that has operated since 1838 and handles relations with Palestinians in Jerusalem, the West Bank, and Gaza, while also providing consular services.

Despite Mr. Powell's talks with Israeli officials, an agreement to keep the Consulate open was not reached. The facility was subsequently downgraded to a mission with a reduced staff. However, this compromise meant the UK did not retaliate by removing Israeli diplomatic staff from Britain.

In her most recent social media post, Ms. Helm contrasted Ms. Rooney's situation with that of others, stating, “She’s free yes and found not guilty of posting a terrorist tweet, whereas others guilty of holding terrorist banners? So where do I sign the letter calling for such absurdity to halt and for Palestine Action to be unbanned under the Terrorism act?” Ms. Helm’s vocal support for pro-Palestinian causes, particularly in response to the October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel by Hamas, has drawn significant attention. Former Foreign Office official Ben Judah highlighted some of her posts as “genuinely shocking.” Ms. Helm also criticized European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's remarks on Israel's right to self-defense, calling them “empty dangerous glib tropes on a subject she apparently doesn’t understand.”
