The United Kingdom has announced the deployment of Eurofighter Typhoon jets to aid Saudi Arabia in defending against attacks from Yemen’s Houthi rebels. The British Ministry of Defence stated on Tuesday that these warplanes will operate in a purely defensive capacity, focusing on protecting Saudi cities and critical national infrastructure from aerial threats, without engaging in offensive actions against the Iranian-backed group.

The support package includes an extension of air-to-air refuelling capabilities for Saudi air operations. This decision comes amidst escalating conflict between the Houthis, also known as Ansar Allah, and Yemen’s internationally recognised government, which receives backing from Saudi Arabia.

Recent weeks have seen the Houthis launch missile and drone strikes targeting the kingdom, including Riyadh’s main airport. In response, the Saudi-led coalition has conducted air attacks on Houthi positions within Yemen.

UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting condemned the Houthi attacks, stating, “The continuing attacks from the Houthis on our ally Saudi Arabia are absolutely despicable. The targeting of the airport in Riyadh in particular shows the lengths the Houthis are going to escalate the situation in the region.” He further elaborated, “That’s why today I have approved further UK military support. RAF Typhoons will fly defensive air missions to help protect Saudi airspace from drones and missiles. This builds on the UK equipment and personnel we already have in the country to defend against Houthi air attacks.”
