The United Nations has issued a stark warning that the ongoing siege on Yemen's Taiz has severely disrupted humanitarian supplies, leaving many residents without essential food and resources. UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk urged the Houthis, also known as Ansar Allah, to immediately permit humanitarian relief into the city, emphasizing the risk of a catastrophe if access remains blocked. Turk stated that the Houthis' closure of the sole supply route connecting Taiz to Aden places civilians in grave danger, hindering aid and cutting off vital provisions. He stressed the necessity of allowing humanitarian aid to enter the city freely and facilitating safe passage for civilians wishing to leave.

Taiz, a city that has endured repeated sieges throughout the conflict, is once again encircled by the Houthis following their capture of a crucial road linking it to southern Yemen. The humanitarian crisis in Taiz is escalating, with the prices of basic commodities soaring and certain goods becoming scarce. Intense fighting within the Taiz governorate has also resulted in the deaths of at least 32 civilians, including 14 children, between August 1 and October 19, with fears of further casualties as the conflict draws nearer to the city. Turk appealed to all parties involved to avoid using explosive weapons with wide-area effects in populated areas and to implement all feasible precautions to safeguard civilians and civilian objects.

Yemen's internationally recognized government has appealed to the United Nations for intervention to lift the blockade, highlighting that the Houthi siege endangers over 4 million people. The UN World Food Programme (WFP) has reported that shifting front lines and road closures have cut off 800,000 individuals from life-saving assistance, with the majority located in Taiz. Across the nation, more than 18 million Yemenis are facing severe food insecurity.

In response, forces aligned with the internationally recognized government launched air strikes in the Taiz governorate on Monday, reportedly destroying Houthi reinforcements in Najd Qasim and a weapons depot in Jabal Habashi.
