President Donald Trump stated on Tuesday that Democratic representative Ilhan Omar could face jail time and also criticized her Somali heritage. During an event in the Oval Office where he introduced a federal fraud whistleblower incentive program, Mr. Trump described Ms. Omar as "a sick and very dishonest person" who "hates our country." He elaborated, "She could also go to jail. You know, they keep talking about deportation. No, she could go to jail. This is just my opinion. I think she's a sick, a very dishonest person who hates our country."

This is not the first time Mr. Trump has attacked Ms. Omar, a Somali-born American citizen and one of the first Muslim women elected to Congress. Earlier this month, U.S. federal agents reportedly raided her Washington home in connection with a criminal fraud investigation into her immigration paperwork. Ms. Omar has consistently denied any wrongdoing, characterizing the allegations as false and politically motivated. She immigrated to the U.S. as a child, escaping the civil war in Somalia. In 2019, she was elected to represent Minnesota's 5th District in Congress. As a vocal critic of Mr. Trump, she is currently seeking re-election for her seat in the upcoming November 3 midterms.

Minnesota is home to a significant Somali community. Mr. Trump made disparaging remarks about Somalia, calling it "a real [expletive]" and stating, "It's got no government ... all they do is have people running around shooting each other." He added, "She's a disgrace to our country, and it's amazing that she can get elected, but Somalians vote for her." Last year, Minnesota became the center of a fraud scandal involving numerous individuals, predominantly of Somali descent, linked to theft within a large pandemic-era meal program.

Mr. Trump's remarks coincide with an increase in Islamophobic rhetoric, much of which has targeted Muslim candidates and elected officials. He has also frequently criticized Abdul El-Sayed, who is campaigning for a Senate seat in Michigan and could become the first Muslim senator in U.S. history if elected. Many of Mr. Trump's attacks have occurred during his campaign rallies and on online platforms.
