Britain’s King Charles III hosted Oman’s Sultan Haitham bin Tariq for a significant state visit, commending the Gulf Arab leader's dedication to fostering regional peace. The visit, which commenced on October 20, 2026, with a state banquet at Windsor Castle, marks the first state visit to the United Kingdom by a sultan of Oman in 44 years.

During the banquet, Sultan Haitham bin Tariq highlighted Oman's commitment to diplomacy in a volatile region. "In a region that has known too much conflict, Oman has chosen a different path, an independent path," he stated, acknowledging Britain as a supportive partner. King Charles III echoed these sentiments, praising Oman's peacemaking initiatives in the Middle East and its "noble efforts" to ensure the safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. "I would especially like to recognise, at a time when conflict has returned so painfully to the region, Oman’s enduring commitment as a trusted interlocutor to all parties," the King remarked to approximately 160 guests. He further lauded Oman's "constructive neutrality" as being of significant importance beyond the Strait of Hormuz, deserving of "utmost respect."

The sultan's visit occurs against a backdrop of severe regional instability, exacerbated by the ongoing Iran war. Oman, a crucial military ally to the United Kingdom and bordering the vital Hormuz waterway, has played a mediating role in discussions between the United States and Iran since the US-Israel war against Iran began in late February.

Sultan Haitham bin Tariq is scheduled to hold discussions with Prime Minister Andy Burnham at Downing Street on Wednesday, with security, trade, and investment anticipated to be key topics. Prime Minister Burnham was among the distinguished attendees at the state banquet, which also included the chief executives of Shell, BP, and Airbus, along with members of the royal family and other dignitaries.
