Anthropic, the artificial intelligence (AI) company behind the chatbot Claude, has reported a net loss exceeding $80 billion for the first half of 2026, as detailed by The Wall Street Journal. This significant financial figure comes as the company gears up for its initial public offering (IPO). Furthermore, Anthropic has indicated a potential expenditure of up to $750 billion in the coming years to bolster its computing capacity, with ongoing discussions for potential acquisitions, according to the Journal's report on Tuesday. The primary reason cited for this substantial loss is $72 billion in accounting charges stemming from adjustments in the valuation of convertible notes and other financial instruments issued by Anthropic to secure funding. This loss represents a sharp increase from the $13 billion recorded a year prior, as revealed in a draft prospectus for its IPO. These figures underscore the immense costs associated with the current AI race, even as investors scrutinize the return on investment for the substantial capital being poured into chips and data centers. Anthropic also outlined potential risks, including challenges in preventing its products from causing harm, whether through advanced cyberattacks or exploitation by uncontrolled AI models. Anthropic has not yet responded to a request for comment, and the information regarding non-public details could not be independently verified at this time.

Reuters initially reported in September that Anthropic had incurred a net loss of $42 billion in 2025, a finding that emerged from its IPO prospectus. The company has seen success with Claude Code, its coding assistant favored by developers for software development and app creation. However, some current and prospective investors who attended Anthropic’s recent investor day in San Francisco, California, are reportedly considering a lower valuation for the AI firm following its latest financial disclosures, according to four individuals familiar with the matter who spoke to Reuters. These investors discussed a valuation in the vicinity of $1.5 trillion during the event, a notable decrease from the previously anticipated $2 trillion valuation for the planned November share sale. Anthropic's revenue saw a significant surge to $16.3 billion in the six-month period concluding on June 30, a substantial jump from $1.1 billion in the same period last year. Concurrently, spending on AI infrastructure nearly quadrupled, reaching almost $9 billion, as reported by The Journal. Last week, Anthropic also shared findings indicating that AI could be mere months away from achieving the capability to self-replicate on common household devices.
