Independent Australian MP Helen Haines has had both her legs amputated following a severe incident where she was struck by a vehicle outside her office in Wangaratta, Victoria, on Monday. The independent politician was critically injured while retrieving an item from her car. According to Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke, another vehicle executed a U-turn, hit Mrs Haines, reversed, and then struck her a second time.
Doctors performed the first amputation on Monday and the second on Wednesday at a Melbourne hospital, as confirmed by her husband, Phil Haines. He stated that the most important outcome is that Helen is alive and in a stable condition. "The good news in all this is Helen is alive and she’s stable," he said. "This is the most important thing for our family."
Australian police have charged 43-year-old Brendan Nugent in connection with the alleged attack. He faces charges including causing harm to a Commonwealth public official, intentionally causing serious harm, and dangerous driving, as detailed in a police statement released on Tuesday.
Mr Nugent appeared in Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday and has been remanded in custody until his next hearing in February. Federal and state authorities are actively investigating the motive behind the attack, with support from the joint counter-terrorism task force, which includes the Australian spy agency ASIO. Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Mike Bush described the incident as "a deliberate but isolated event" during a press conference on Wednesday. He noted that state authorities had no prior intelligence on Mr Nugent and "nothing known to us that would’ve arisen or piqued our interest or given any indication that he was an immediate threat."
It remains unclear if Mr Nugent has legal representation. In a statement, Mr Nugent’s father and wife expressed that Mrs Haines had been a friend for decades and called the attack "unfathomable." The incident has sent shockwaves through Australia, a country where political violence is exceedingly rare, and has prompted calls for a de-escalation of heated public rhetoric.
