Neil Bush, brother of former Republican President George W. Bush, has publicly declared his support for Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico in a closely contested race for a United States Senate seat in Texas. Bush announced his vote for Talarico via a social media post on Tuesday, citing significant concerns regarding the Republican candidate, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.

Talarico and Paxton are engaged in a tight contest for the open Senate seat in Texas, a state where Democrats are aiming to gain control of the 100-member Senate in the upcoming November 3 midterm elections, which will feature 35 Senate seats on the ballot. Neil Bush's endorsement of Talarico highlights a growing division within the Texas Republican party. The Bush family is a prominent Republican dynasty, with both Neil's brother, George W. Bush, and their father, the late George H.W. Bush, having served as President of the United States.

"My concerns about his judgment and conduct are hardly mine alone," Neil Bush stated in his post. "He was impeached by the Republican-controlled Texas House, although subsequently acquitted by the Texas Senate." Bush further elaborated on his decision by referencing Paxton's controversial record, including his efforts to support former President Donald Trump's unsubstantiated claims about the 2020 presidential election results.

"I have been deeply troubled by Paxton’s conduct as Texas Attorney General, particularly his decision to challenge the results of the 2020 presidential election in other states in an effort to help Donald Trump remain in power," Bush said. "I believe that effort was an affront to our democratic institutions and the peaceful transfer of power."

While former President George W. Bush has largely withdrawn from public political life and has not endorsed candidates in recent elections, his daughter, Barbara Bush, has also shown support for Talarico by contributing to a political action committee that backs his campaign. Texas has historically been a Republican stronghold, with Democrats not having won a Senate race in the state since 1988. However, current polling indicates that Talarico is in a competitive race with Paxton, who previously defeated incumbent Senator John Cornyn in the Republican primary run-off on May 26. Paxton had received an endorsement from Donald Trump on May 19, just days before the run-off, with Trump criticizing Cornyn for not being supportive during challenging times and praising Paxton as a "MAGA Warrior." Some Republicans have voiced discontent over Trump's intervention on Paxton's behalf, given Paxton's state impeachment and other scandals. A Marist poll released on October 14 showed Talarico leading Paxton 47 percent to 45 percent.
