The United States Ambassador to Turkiye, who also serves as the special presidential envoy for Syria and Iraq, has stated that Washington's relationship with Middle Eastern countries requires a significant alteration. Tom Barrack indicated that the US is moving away from a strategy of regional dominance. While not directly commenting on whether the war in Iran was a misstep, he acknowledged the instability it generated, leading to unforeseen outcomes. Barrack highlighted President Donald Trump's opposition to prolonged military engagements, referred to as "forever wars," and suggested that ending the US-Israel conflict with Iran would necessitate substantial compromise from all parties involved, requiring them to accept unfavorable conditions. He expressed concern that escalating tensions could result in miscalculations. Barrack noted a deficit of trust between Washington and Tehran, which is impeding negotiations for a potential agreement. In an interview with Al Jazeera, he advised regional nations against relying on the US for problem-solving, urging them to prioritize self-reliance. He clarified that the Trump administration is not abandoning the region but is instead reassessing its role. Barrack conceded that past US interventions in the region have demonstrated the ineffectiveness of interventionist policies and regime change. He advocated for prioritizing diplomatic solutions and mutual respect over armed conflict.
