German authorities have announced the arrest of a Ukrainian national on suspicion of espionage for Russia. The Federal Prosecutors' Office confirmed on Thursday that the individual, identified as Vadym Y, was apprehended in the state of Brandenburg, approximately 85 kilometers west of Berlin. According to prosecutors, the suspect had been in contact with Russian secret services through an intermediary since at least July 2025. The investigation revealed that the suspect allegedly gathered military intelligence concerning the production of armored vehicles, ammunition, and explosives. This intelligence also included information on military personnel and defense installations situated along NATO's eastern flank.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, currently attending the EU-Western Balkans Summit in Montenegro with regional leaders, stated he was "not surprised" by the news of the alleged Russian spy. This arrest follows recent accusations by German authorities holding Russia responsible for drone attacks, which officials have characterized as part of Moscow's "shadow war" against Germany. Earlier this week, Germany's armed forces elevated the threat level for Russian sabotage against their troops and facilities to "significant," the second-highest level on their internal threat scale, according to German news reports.

This heightened alert comes in the wake of a mid-September incident where a drone carrying high explosives crashed near the Wunstorf airbase in Lower Saxony. German news outlets WDR and Sueddeutsche Zeitung reported that this drone bore similarities to another explosive-laden unmanned aircraft used in a failed attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport in August 2026. While the Leipzig incident was believed to target civilian cargo aircraft, investigators now suspect the Wunstorf drone was aimed at military aircraft, based on an internal military document obtained by German media.

Further reports highlight a pattern of suspected Russian reconnaissance activities across Germany. These include instances of drones being flown over a missile defense site in Saxony-Anhalt and the discovery of a camouflaged camera filming a strategically important railway station in Minden, North Rhine-Westphalia. Martin Jaeger, head of Germany's BND spy service, informed lawmakers this month that Russia's undeclared "shadow war" against Germany and its allies is intensifying and has "taken on a new, more dangerous character." He warned that "Germany is at risk of being drawn into a violent conflict with Russia," speaking to an intelligence oversight committee at the Bundestag. Moscow has denied any involvement in sabotage or hybrid attacks against European nations.
