A devastating fire that claimed the lives of four soldiers at a Canadian military base was initiated by a live grenade exercise, according to a military official. The fatal blaze erupted on a grenade launcher range during military exercises on Saturday. High winds subsequently propelled the flames across the Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Wainwright, Alberta, Canada.
Brigadier-General Vanessa Hanrahan, commander of the Canadian Forces Military Police Group, stated on Thursday that a sudden shift in wind direction and velocity significantly intensified the fire. The flames spread to a training area at the Wainwright military base in Alberta. Due to the fire's location within the range's "permanent danger area," firefighters were unable to directly intervene, Hanrahan explained.
The fire spread on Saturday afternoon amidst high-intensity combat training involving Charlie Company of the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. The base, situated in the prairies, features wide-open grasslands, rolling plains, and scattered tree groves. Approximately 84 soldiers were divided between a grenade range and an area for practicing attacks on simulated enemy positions. The fire subsequently swept into the second training area.
The incident resulted in four soldiers losing their lives and 39 others sustaining injuries, with 27 requiring hospitalization. This event marks one of the most severe peacetime tragedies for Canada’s military. The soldiers and reserve members were participating in exercises in preparation for a planned deployment to Latvia, where Canadian forces maintain their largest international military operation.
The Wainwright base is recognized as one of the largest facilities operated by the Canadian Armed Forces and frequently hosts training exercises for military personnel from NATO countries. Historically, during the final months of World War II and for several months in 1946, the base served as an internment center for German prisoners of war.
