FIFA President Gianni Infantino has received a significant endorsement for another term from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), a body comprising 47 member confederations. This backing, announced at the AFC's extraordinary congress in Tokyo, Japan, could be pivotal in securing a fourth mandate for Infantino, who leads the global football governing body. The FIFA election is scheduled for March, with the deadline for candidates to register their intent to run against Infantino set for November 18. As of now, no challengers have emerged.

During the congress, AFC President Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa publicly embraced Infantino, expressing the confederation's "full commitment to supporting you and your leadership." Sheikh Salman acknowledged Infantino's extensive travels across Asia and his understanding of the continent's needs. While indicating that not all AFC members might align with the endorsement, he expressed confidence that the majority would support Infantino.

This endorsement marks an abrupt reversal for Sheikh Salman and the AFC. Just over two months prior, the AFC had joined European and North/Central American football bodies in accusing Infantino of a "fundamental breach of trust." Infantino had recently apologized to FIFA's ruling council for "mistakes" made in a now-abandoned $4.2 billion plan to sell stakes in FIFA events to private investors. Sheikh Salman alluded to past disagreements but emphasized a new understanding, stating, "The past I’m sure is part of our history... What matters now is how we move forward together."

FIFA's media office has highlighted Infantino's global campaign efforts, which reportedly involve promises of increased financial support for football nations. Sheikh Salman humorously noted Infantino's relentless travel schedule, suggesting he might have a "clone." The AFC President concluded by reaffirming the confederation's united support, declaring, "As one Asian family, we are ready to move forward, united in your support, Gianni."

Infantino, in his response, acknowledged that "When you do many things... you do some mistakes as well." He stressed the importance of learning from experiences and mistakes, apologizing, and moving forward together to build for the future. He also highlighted the significant increase in financial aid to member associations, noting that funding would rise from $1 million every four years to $25 million starting January 1.
