The White House announced that First Lady Melania Trump has successfully negotiated a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in the southern Ukrainian city of Oleshky. This city has been under Russian occupation since February 2022. Neither Russia nor Ukraine immediately confirmed the White House's statement on Friday, which coincides with the Trump administration's renewed diplomatic efforts to end the conflict. These efforts have involved increasing pressure on Ukraine while offering concessions to Russia.
Melania Trump stated, "The situation in Oleshky is dire. Oleshky is a front-line war city on the brink of disaster." She further elaborated on the conditions, noting, "The people of Oleshky have limited electricity, live amid mined roads, and endure regular military attacks." She emphasized the necessity of her intervention, saying, "It was abundantly clear that without my intervention, the possibility to bring humanitarian aid into the city and to evacuate the elderly would be impossible."
The First Lady revealed that her representatives collaborated directly with "Russian and Ukrainian leadership to define the terms of the localized ceasefire." She added that civilian leaders from both nations would cooperate to facilitate humanitarian access for the city's residents. Oleshky, which had a pre-war population of 24,000, is situated on the southeastern front of the conflict. It was seized by Russian forces on the first day of the invasion in February 2022 and has since endured intense shelling. Although most inhabitants have departed, the remaining approximately 2,000 residents face severe shortages of food and medical supplies. Both sides have previously accused each other of obstructing the delivery of essential goods.
In her statement, Melania Trump indicated that any of the remaining residents wishing to leave would be transported to their "preferred destination," adding, "I anticipate some will want to go to Russia, and some to Ukraine." She also mentioned that "an impartial American media organisation" would accompany Russian and Ukrainian teams on the ground to ensure that families' wishes are respected, though she did not name the organization.
This development follows Melania Trump's prior efforts to reunite children seized by Russia during the war. The announcement also comes shortly after the Kremlin indicated its agreement to resume US-mediated talks with Ukraine as early as the following month, despite significant disagreements on the terms of a potential resolution. The Trump administration's strategy has included heightened rhetorical pressure on Ukraine alongside concessions to Russia, which the administration claims are intended to mitigate high fuel costs exacerbated by the US-Iran conflict. Meanwhile, Ukraine has reported disruptions to its Starshield military satellite system, crucial for its air defense, with Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Zelenskyy subsequently announcing an agreement to address these issues. Starshield is a variant of the Starlink system operated by Elon Musk's SpaceX.
