Paris Saint-Germain's Ligue 1 home fixture against Lyon, originally slated for Sunday, has been rescheduled to Monday following a request from police amidst escalating violent protests in Paris. This postponement means Ousmane Dembele, the reigning Ballon d'Or holder, will be unable to attend the awards ceremony in London, where he and several PSG teammates are nominated.
The 29-year-old French international forward was a strong contender for the award, having contributed to France's FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-final run and PSG's successful defense of their UEFA Champions League title. The French league (LFP) confirmed the rescheduling, stating, "The LFP takes note of the police decree prohibiting the staging of the game between Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique Lyonnais on Sunday at 8:45 pm [19:45 GMT] … and has decided to reschedule the match for Monday at 8:30 pm."
French authorities are preparing for further protests this weekend, following significant urban unrest that occurred during demonstrations last week. Both PSG and Lyon were level on 14 points at the top of Ligue 1 before the eighth round of games. Monday's rescheduled match will now coincide with the Ballon d'Or awards ceremony.
Several PSG players are on the men's shortlist for the Ballon d'Or, including Dembele (France), Achraf Hakimi (Morocco), Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (Georgia), Marquinhos (Brazil), Nuno Mendes (Portugal), Joao Neves (Portugal), Vitinha (Portugal), Willian Pacho (Ecuador), Fabian Ruiz (Spain), and Ferran Torres (Spain).
Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu announced on Tuesday that a "massive" security operation, including troop reinforcements, will be deployed for planned protests on Saturday, following riots and looting in Paris and other French cities on October 17. The PSG-Lyon match is one of several major sporting events planned in the Paris region this weekend. The NFL game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New Orleans Saints at the Stade de France on Sunday is also expected to require substantial police presence. Additionally, Toulouse's Ligue 1 home match against Troyes has been moved from Saturday to Sunday at the request of local authorities.
