Melania Trump, wife of US President Donald Trump, has successfully negotiated a localized ceasefire in the Ukrainian city of Oleshky, which is under Russian control. The White House announced on Friday that the ceasefire is set to commence on October 29. Oleshky has been occupied by Russian forces since February 2022, and its residents have reported a worsening food crisis.
In a statement, the First Lady described the situation in Oleshky as "dire" and "on the brink of disaster." The White House confirmed that both Russia and Ukraine have agreed to temporarily halt all military activities in Oleshky. This pause is intended to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid and to establish a safe passage for civilian evacuation.
"Oleshky’s remaining population is comprised primarily of elderly residents who urgently need medical attention, medicine, food and clean water," Ms. Trump stated. She further elaborated on the dire conditions, noting, "The people of Oleshky have limited electricity, live amid mined roads and endure regular military attacks." Ms. Trump emphasized that her intervention was crucial, stating it was "abundantly clear" that without it, the delivery of humanitarian aid and the evacuation of the elderly would have been "impossible."
This development occurs as President Trump has increasingly adopted a stance favoring Russia in its conflict with Ukraine. He has frequently criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for not pursuing a peace deal and has previously waived sanctions to permit the import of Russian diesel, a move aimed at lowering prices before the November 3 midterm elections.
Regarding his wife's announcement, Mr. Trump commented to reporters, "not the worst idea I've ever heard." He added, "What she wants to do is save children ... It was her initiative, and they contacted both sides, and both sides wanted to do it."
Ms. Trump has been actively involved in efforts to facilitate the return of Ukrainian children seized by Russia during the war to their families. Last year, she mentioned having an "open channel of communication" with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the welfare of children affected by the war.
Oleshky, situated across the Dnipro River from Kherson, has a current population estimated between 1,700 and 2,000 residents, predominantly elderly individuals and approximately 50 children. This is a significant decrease from its pre-war population of roughly 24,000, according to the White House. The White House also reported that about 90 percent of the city was flooded following the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam.
The White House stated that Ms. Trump and her representatives engaged directly with Russian and Ukrainian leadership to finalize the terms of the localized ceasefire. "Residents who wish to evacuate will receive co-ordinated support and transportation to their preferred destination. I anticipate some will want to go to Russia and some to Ukraine," Ms. Trump said.
The plight of Oleshky's residents came to Ms. Trump's attention during a private conversation at an event during the UN General Assembly in New York, the White House reported.
