Kenya has confirmed its second death due to Ebola, as the virus continues its spread from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) across various African nations. The Kenyan Ministry of Health announced on Friday that the deceased is a 65-year-old woman who exhibited symptoms while in quarantine. She was a close relative of a Kenyan man who succumbed to Ebola earlier this month.

According to the ministry, Kenya is currently treating seven Ebola patients in two isolation facilities. All identified cases are contained within a single cluster, with no indications of community transmission observed. Kenya's initial Ebola case was identified this month in a man who had traveled from the DRC to Kenya and passed away at a Nairobi hospital on October 5. Since then, Kenyan authorities have successfully traced 135 contacts, all of whom have been placed under quarantine. Nine cases have been confirmed to date, including the two fatalities.

The DRC declared its 17th Ebola outbreak in May and has since recorded over 9,000 cases and more than 4,600 deaths. Globally, the disease has claimed over 15,000 lives in Africa over the last five decades. The current outbreak has now reached four countries across eastern, central, and western Africa, marking the widest geographic distribution of any Ebola outbreak on the continent thus far.

On Tuesday, Nigeria became the fourth African nation to report an Ebola case. Nigerian Health Minister Muhammad Ali Pate stated on Friday that an analysis confirmed the case was closely linked to the virus detected in the index case in Kenya. In response to the escalating situation, Uganda announced on Saturday that travelers with a recent history of travel to the DRC would be prohibited from transiting through the East African nation. Uganda had previously recorded 20 infections, primarily among individuals who had traveled from the DRC, and two deaths before being declared Ebola-free in August.
