Lionel Messi, the legendary Argentinian forward, was presented with Spain’s most prestigious sports award on Friday. The accolade recognizes not only his illustrious football career but also his significant contributions to providing disadvantaged children with access to health and education.

The 39-year-old footballer had been named the winner of the Princess of Asturias Award for Sports back in June. The jury lauded him as “the most successful footballer of all time” and acknowledged his impactful social work.

A crowd of fans, many wearing Argentina football shirts, gathered in Oviedo, the capital of the northern Spanish region of Asturias, to cheer and chant Messi’s name as he arrived to the sound of bagpipes and drums.

Princess Leonor, the heiress to the Spanish throne and after whom the awards are named, presented Messi with a formal roll of parchment. She commended his “unique career,” stating, “He turned the extraordinary into routine by reading the game and deciding on the most effective option in fractions of a second, while respecting the collective essence above ego.”

Widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers ever, Messi boasts an impressive collection of accolades, including eight Ballon d’Or titles, a World Cup, and numerous club trophies. His storied career at Barcelona spanned 21 years, during which he was part of dominant Spanish and European sides under managers Pep Guardiola and Luis Enrique.

Earlier this year, Messi, who is Argentina’s all-time leading goalscorer, assist provider, and most-capped player, concluded his international career after the World Cup final loss to Spain in New Jersey. Reflecting on his journey, Messi shared at an event with children in Oviedo on Thursday that “The most important thing is to know how to lose and how to win,” emphasizing the fundamental nature of this attitude in football.

Established in 1981, the Princess of Asturias Awards are the most esteemed in the Spanish-speaking world and include a prize of 50,000 euros ($56,000). The awards celebrate achievements across arts, sciences, and sports, honoring efforts that promote human coexistence, solidarity, and global cooperation.

Other notable recipients at Friday's ceremony included British author Julian Barnes, pioneering US astronaut Christina Koch, and punk icon Patti Smith. Past recipients of the sports award include tennis legends Serena Williams and Rafael Nadal, marathoner Eliud Kipchoge, and skier Lindsey Vonn.

Following his departure from Barcelona in 2021, Messi played for French club Paris Saint-Germain for two seasons before joining Inter Miami in Major League Soccer (MLS).

Barcelona offered its congratulations via social media, posting, “Richly deserved recognition for your outstanding talent, which has left a lasting impact both on and off the pitch, making you a benchmark in world football due to your excellence, commitment to sport and solidarity. An inseparable bond that forms part of the Club’s legacy and for which your involvement will always be a source of שלנו pride.”
