Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany is in a stable condition in hospital after collapsing while observing the German club's reserve team train on Friday. Kompany had been feeling unwell during the week, with reports indicating he was struggling with a virus. The 40-year-old missed Bayern's pre-match media conference ahead of their Uefa Champions League draw with Arsenal.

Kompany was present on the touchline at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday, despite the heavy rain, for the match that ended 2-2. Alphonso Davies and Harry Kane scored for Bayern, with the German and English champions sharing the points.

Bayern's next fixture is an away game against Freiburg on Sunday, which the former Belgium and Manchester City captain will now miss as he undergoes further medical tests in hospital. "The good news is he's stable," stated Bayern's director of sport Max Eberl, who was accompanied by assistant coach Aaron Danks at Saturday's press conference before the Freiburg match. "I spoke with him last night, and with his wife too. It wasn't a good moment for any of us; he collapsed on the pitch yesterday and will remain in hospital for a few more days until everything is thoroughly checked. It underscores once again that health is the most important thing in life – not football. So, all of us send our best wishes. We as FC Bayern stand together. The priority is to establish the cause and for him to get fit again. He will only return when he is fit."

Eberl continued, "They have been investigating the cause all along. He had already been experiencing minor issues last week. The doctors are doing everything they can to determine the cause. The tests have already provided some preliminary results, but further outcomes are necessary to precisely identify the issue and the expected recovery duration. I am not a doctor, but we can support him with energy and love."

Eberl acknowledged that he did not know how long Kompany would be absent but emphasized that he would be given "all the time" he requires. "We are not going to set any timeframes," he said. "We need to ascertain the problem, and then it becomes a question of the recovery period. We are not discussing days, but weeks. We are all clear on that. We have such a fantastic coaching staff, led by Vinnie. But our success is attributed to an outstanding team behind the scenes. There is absolutely no intention of making any changes. All the individuals here are outstanding – and so, in the spirit of Vinnie, which everyone embodies, we can all face the coming weeks."

Eberl also admitted that some of the young players who witnessed their manager's collapse were "a bit overwhelmed" by the experience. "For the U23s, it occurred while they were training, so they witnessed it directly," he added. "For 17- and 18-year-old boys, that is quite significant – many of them have not had to confront adversity before. Some things just happen. The boys were a bit overwhelmed; that's only natural. Everyone looks out for one another; that's what defines FC Bayern. We are there for each other and for everyone else affected by this. That is Bayern Munich – it's not just empty rhetoric, but it's what truly distinguishes us. The fact that we navigate this together and support one another truly strengthens the family, which is the paramount aspect."

Bayern currently leads the Bundesliga standings with 14 points from six games, ahead of Borussia Dortmund on goal difference. In the Champions League, they are in 14th place, having secured one win and two draws so far, leaving them one point shy of the automatic qualification spots for the knockout stages. Kompany took over as manager in 2024, guiding the club to successive Bundesliga titles, one German Cup, and two German Super Cups.
