US President Donald Trump has issued a strong warning regarding potential "economic consequences" for nations engaging with Iran, appearing to focus on countries across Asia and the Middle East, though specific details remain limited.

Mr Trump stated on Wednesday that any nation allowing financial institutions, businesses, or government entities to offer any form of support to Iran will encounter severe economic repercussions. He wrote on Truth Social that oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries, and front companies must cease immediately.

He further indicated that the US would implement the most severe economic operation ever directed against a country, utilizing economic warfare and isolation against Iran. These comments followed ongoing efforts regarding a peace deal between the US and Iran, which includes the contested reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

According to Aathira Prasad, director of macroeconomics at Nasser Saidi and Associates, the administration appears to be shifting toward secondary sanctions involving threats of tariffs or sanctions against third-party nations due to direct negotiations remaining in limbo. However, she noted that exact measures have not been detailed.

Trade data shows that Iran's key trading partners between January and October included China, Iraq, the UAE, and Turkey. China reported substantial bilateral trade alongside unreported Iranian crude oil exports. Meanwhile, Iranian central bank chief Abdolnaser Hemmati stated on state television that Iran is currently exporting no oil, with revenues having fallen to zero due to strict Washington-led pressure.

In response to regional threats, the UAE announced the suspension of all trade, commercial exchange, and financial transactions with Iran. Afra Al Hameli, director of strategic communications at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasized the UAE's commitment to the international financial system.

While analysts debate whether the US threats serve as temporary leverage or permanent barriers carrying implementation hurdles and legal challenges, China has responded by stating that sanctions and pressure will not succeed, urging diplomatic resolution. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also condemned the US position on X, stating that economic terrorism threatens the global economy and sovereignty worldwide.
