German police have apprehended a suspect following a significant fire that engulfed the Eagle's Nest, Adolf Hitler's notorious mountain retreat from the Nazi era, located in Bavaria. The incident necessitated an extensive overnight emergency response involving approximately 200 firefighters. Fortunately, no injuries were reported at the building, locally known as the Kehlsteinhaus.

Authorities are currently investigating whether the individual taken into temporary custody is connected to the blaze. The fire alarm was activated by a smoke detector shortly before 10:00 PM local time on Friday. Upon arrival, emergency crews observed flames rising above the structure, describing it as "completely ablaze," according to police statements. The remote Alpine setting of the retreat, situated at an elevation exceeding 1,800 meters (approximately 6,000 feet), presented considerable challenges for firefighting efforts, as noted by police spokesperson Lisa Maier.

While the official cause of the fire has not been determined, German media outlets have reported that investigators are considering arson as a possibility. According to the newspaper Bild, emergency responders encountered a motorcyclist on their route to the scene, who was subsequently detained. The extent of his potential involvement remains under investigation. Maier confirmed that inquiries are ongoing, with police planning to hold a news conference later on Saturday.

Constructed between 1937 and 1938, the stone-and-granite retreat is perched on the Kehlstein mountain above Obersalzberg, near Berchtesgaden in southern Germany. Originally conceived as a monument to Hitler's regime and a venue for hosting foreign dignitaries, it offers panoramic views of the Bavarian Alps. Hitler himself is known to have visited the resort. The site, which stands as a significant part of Nazi Germany's historical legacy, remained undamaged throughout World War II. Since 1952, it has operated as a restaurant and also features an exhibition detailing its Nazi-era history.
