Palestinians recently gathered in Gaza City for a mass funeral to lay to rest 50 people from three families who were killed during Israel's military campaign. The bodies were recovered from beneath the rubble weeks after air strikes destroyed neighborhoods in the early months of the conflict that began in October 2023.

According to Al Jazeera correspondent Ghazi al-Aloul, the victims belonged to families including the al-Sawafiri, al-Batniji, and Gharbiya families. The recovered remains came from areas such as Tal al-Hawa, Zeitoun, Sabra, Sheikh Radwan, and Shati. Meanwhile, Gaza’s Civil Defence estimates that approximately 8,000 Palestinians remain missing under collapsed structures.

Recovery teams are facing severe challenges due to a lack of equipment, operating with only a single excavator. Munir al-Bursh, director general of Gaza’s Ministry of Health, has urged the international community to allow heavy machinery, search and rescue tools, and forensic supplies into the enclave to aid recovery efforts and victim identification.

The solemn ceremony took place amid ongoing violations of a ceasefire agreement that went into effect in October. Data indicates that ongoing Israeli attacks have resulted in additional casualties since the agreement started. The previous two-year war has left immense destruction, damaging or destroying roughly 90 percent of Gaza's infrastructure.

In related diplomatic developments, a Hamas delegation led by Khalil al-Hayya met with Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani in Doha. The discussions focused on regional updates and ongoing diplomatic efforts to halt the conflict and secure commitments from involved parties.
