Defending Ningbo Open champion Elena Rybakina has reached another title match, defeating Russian sixth seed Diana Shnaider 6-3, 7-5 in the semifinal. This victory serves as a reminder to her rivals of her formidable presence ahead of the upcoming WTA Finals next month. Rybakina, the world number one, will face Leylah Fernandez in the final on Sunday. Fernandez, an unseeded Canadian, secured her spot in the final by defeating Czech Marie Bouzkova by the same 6-3, 7-5 scoreline in the earlier semifinal held at the Yinzhou International Tennis Centre in Ningbo, China.

Rybakina, who is also the Australian and US Open champion, arrived in Ningbo for her title defense after a challenging defeat in Beijing and a foot injury that previously forced her withdrawal from Wuhan. Despite some inconsistencies against the 13th-ranked Shnaider, Rybakina displayed moments of her peak form. "She [Shnaider] played really well, and it’s always difficult to play against left-handers. We don’t have so many on the tour," Rybakina commented, noting that she faces a similar challenge against Fernandez. "I needed some time. The returns were not as bad, but during the rallies, to switch the pattern was a little bit of an issue for me, but I’m happy I managed to win in two sets."

An assertive start, characterized by powerful winners from the baseline, allowed the three-time Grand Slam winner Rybakina to gain full control of the opening set. She ultimately clinched the set on her 11th set point, following a temporary dip in her performance. "It was an important game, and it was a long one," Rybakina added. "It was on my serve, and it was a struggle … I was playing the first balls really well, but I couldn’t close the game … so many opportunities, but I’m glad it went my way. She played some great shots and great rallies."

In the second set, the 27-year-old continued to face difficulties with the accuracy of her first serve. However, she managed to win the critical points and secured a 4-3 lead with a break, only to be broken back in the tenth game. Rybakina responded assertively to regain the lead in the subsequent game with some powerful hitting, before closing out the match with a more confident display on serve to secure her place in the final. She aims to further refine her game in Sunday's final before shifting her focus to the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo next week, and subsequently defending her WTA Finals title at Indian Wells starting November 8. "It’s never easy," Rybakina stated regarding the prospect of winning consecutive titles at the Ningbo Open. "Of course I’ll try to do my best. I’m going to fight and give my all tomorrow."
